The big buzz in the NBA over the past week is that Miami traded Shaq to the Suns for Shawn Marion and former Celtic, Marcus Banks. When I first heard of the trade, I thought that the Suns got ripped off. But with each passing day, I feel that this was actually good for both sides. The main reasons why I thought that it was a bad trade was because the Suns got rid of the Matrix, Shawn Marion, who I think is one of the best all-around players in the game. He does everything. He can score, shoot the three, defend, come up with boards, and also block shots. He is the type of player that does a little bit of everything. If this were baseball, he would be considered a five tool player. Marion is going to average 15 points, 10 boards, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals a game. Another reason why I thought the Suns got the worse end of the trade is because Shaq is old and injured and also is going to a team that relies on the fast break. There is no way that Shaq will be able to keep up with the rest of the team. All that the Suns could hope for is that he is a solid post defender and is able to grab boards and be the outlet passer.
Those are the reasons why I thought the Heat got the better end of the deal. Even though these reasons are still a big concern, I am starting to feel that the trade is evening out. I see this from a business sense. Shaq is old, and makes a lot of money. The Heat cut their payroll by 10 million dollars and therefore have the ability to go into the free agent market and pick up some good players. The Suns have increased their payroll but got rid of a player that was whining for more money (Marion) and added a player with experience and most of all, size. Shaq will be able to match up on opposing team's big men. This frees up Amare to guard a player that isn't that large. Also, it gives the Suns another option in the post. They are a perimeter shooting team, but with Shaq, their offense has the chance to become more complete and well rounded. The time for the Suns to win is now. They can't keep losing to the Spurs. Shaq will be able to help them reach their goal. All in all, the Heat have a good young nucleus (Marion and Wade) that they can build on while the Suns got a player who should help them win immediately.
