It is only March and the Yankees are already whining. Elliot Johnson, a player for the Tampa Bay Rays ran over Francisco Cervelli, the catcher for the Yankees. Joe Girardi, the manager of the Yankees has since criticized the play. He stated that because it was a spring training game, there was no reason for a player to run over another player. All I have to say about this is that Girardi should shut his trap. What Johnson did was a smart and aggressive play. Any coach would want their player to do the same thing in the same situation. It shows hustle and a desire to do anything to help the team. Don Zimmer made a great point when he said that if the kid slided, he could have broke his leg or injured himself. Why should a player put himself in more danger than an opposing player. They both had a chance of getting injured. The catcher broke his wrist, but it could have been the other way around. The kid could have injured himself and the catcher could have come away unscathed.
Girardi's only argument in this is that because the game was a spring training game, the player should not have ran over the guy. Basically, he is saying that the other team shouldn't play with 100% effort. His argument is asinine. People tackle other players hard in preseason football. Girardi is just pissed because his player, who would never make the big club in the first place, got injured.
Johnson has nothing to be sorry about. He did what he was supposed to do. It is a smart baseball play. he is trying to make the team and he showed that he has the desire to do anything to make it.
Girardi should stop whining and realize that he would have done the same thing if he was playing. Just because they are the Yankees doesn't mean that others should give less effort. Quit crying and play the game.
